Announced in 2014, the Suncor Student Art Awards and Kim Jenkins Student Art Scholarship are a collaboration between Suncor Energy, Arts Council Wood Buffalo, Fort McMurray Public School District, and Fort McMurray Catholic School District.
The purpose of the program is to increase the reach and impact of artwork created within the school system and to build the confidence of emerging artists to exhibit their work.
Throughout the year, the Suncor Business Centre hosts three student art exhibitions: one for Public High Schools, one for Catholic High Schools, and one for Jr. High Schools from both districts.
Awards are given to the top five pieces in the high school exhibitions and the top three pieces in the junior high exhibition, which are selected through Suncor employee voting. The Kim Jenkins Student Art Scholarship is given to a Grade 12 student pursuing Visual Arts or Design (or similar field) at the Post-Secondary level the following year whose work in the annual QUAD High exhibition at the MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery shows the most promise. The scholarship and two runner-up prizes are awarded through a jury of the QUAD High show.
In June of every year, Suncor Energy hosts a reception for the award winners and program stakeholders where the awards are distributed. The winning pieces from the 3 exhibitions and QUAD High will displayed together at the reception.
